South Orange, New Jersey — December 20 — The South Essex Fire Department was called to Jacoby Street in Maplewood on December 20 in response to a reported structure fire. When the first units arrived, they discovered a multi-family home with fire conditions on the second and third levels and a working fire. Mutual aid arrived at the area as a result of the simultaneous transmission of a second alert and Signal 11. In order to prevent fire from spreading to neighboring buildings, companies extended several inside handlines and exposure lines. The fire was under control at 2352 hours after firefighters worked for around two hours in bitter cold and strong gusts. Neither residents nor responders reported any injuries. The American Red Cross was asked to help nine people and two children who had been relocated. The cause is still being looked into.
