January 24, 2026 — As a winter storm approaches the region, the Boonton Township Fire Department has issued an important safety advisory to residents, urging the community to take precautions and prioritize safety throughout the duration of the storm. Officials are asking residents to remain indoors whenever possible and limit travel to essential trips only. Reducing traffic on roadways will allow municipal plow crews to clear streets efficiently and ensure first responders can reach emergencies without delay.

In addition to staying off the roads, residents are reminded to clear snow from exterior vents, including furnace, water heater, and dryer exhausts, and to keep gas meters free from snow and ice buildup to prevent potential hazards. The department also emphasized generator safety, advising homeowners to operate generators outdoors at least 20 feet from homes, away from doors, windows, and vents, and never in enclosed spaces. Proper use of grounded cords and avoiding overloading equipment are critical to preventing fires and carbon monoxide exposure.

Fire officials further encouraged residents to help firefighters by clearing snow around fire hydrants—at least three feet in all directions—and shoveling a path to the street to ensure quick access in an emergency. Community members are also asked to check on elderly neighbors, family, and friends during the storm. In the event of an emergency, residents should dial 911 immediately. The Boonton Township Fire Department remains committed to protecting the community and appreciates residents’ cooperation in keeping everyone safe during severe winter weather.
