Wednesday, December 11, 2025 —With the first significant cold snap of the season underway, the Brigantine Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2657 report responding to multiple water-leak emergencies caused by frozen and burst pipes. Fire officials warn that these incidents can result in severe property damage, costly repairs, and prolonged displacement for homeowners, particularly in seasonal or unoccupied residences. Residents are being urged to take proactive steps to winterize their homes, including having sprinkler systems professionally winterized, disconnecting garden hoses, maintaining indoor temperatures of at least 55 degrees, insulating vulnerable areas such as basements and crawl spaces, and shutting off and draining water systems if leaving for extended periods. Firefighters also recommend asking neighbors or caretakers to periodically check homes during extreme cold. Officials stress that simple preventive measures taken now can help avoid thousands of dollars in damage as winter conditions intensify across the area.
