Wednesday, December 11, 2025 — According to a message released by Fire Official Jack Murray of the Brigantine Fire and EMS Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau, an official Code Blue Alert has been issued for Atlantic County due to dangerously cold weather conditions forecast by the National Weather Service. A Code Blue is triggered when temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, or when wind chills drop to 0 degrees or lower for a minimum of two hours. The alert is designed to protect individuals who may be living outdoors or in unsafe or inadequately heated conditions during extreme cold.

Officials reminded residents that life-threatening emergencies should be reported by calling 9-1-1, while non-emergency assistance can be requested through the Brigantine Police Department at 609-266-7414. When activated, warming centers across the region will be listed through NJ 211 at nj211.org, providing shelter and resources to those in need during the cold snap.

Fire officials also emphasized tenant protections under New Jersey law, which requires landlords to provide safe and adequately heated living conditions. In Brigantine, municipal code §238-3(F) mandates that rental properties maintain a minimum indoor temperature of 68 degrees from September 15 through June 1. Tenants experiencing a loss of heat are urged to contact the Brigantine Bureau of Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement at 609-266-3102, email fireprevention@brigantinebeachnj.com, or submit a complaint through the “Report a Concern” portal on the City of Brigantine website. Authorities further noted that all rental units must be properly registered and inspected under Brigantine Code Chapter 246, with larger buildings also subject to state housing inspection requirements.
