Magnolia, NJ — December 2 — A box alarm in the evening notified Magnolia Fire Company 29 to help the Somerdale Fire Department with a reported house fire. When units arrived, they discovered that the fire was limited to the home's chimney structure. As the second-due ladder company, Quint Company 29 waited as Somerdale firefighters finished suppression and verified conditions. Companies operated for a short time before becoming available again, and no extension was found. Fire officials advise residents to have fireplaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned every year, make sure flues are open before use, burn seasoned firewood, maintain clear hearth areas, and dispose of ashes securely because chimney accidents are on the rise during the heating season. Chimney fire risk can be decreased with regular maintenance and protective measures.
