On 16th Dec 2025, Brookhaven National Laboratory is advancing sustainable energy research through its on-site greenhouse, where biologists grow and study plants year-round to unlock the future of bioenergy crops.

Inside the facility, researchers cultivate a wide range of plants under tightly controlled conditions, allowing them to examine how crops respond to changes in nutrients, light, and environment. The goal is to identify innovative ways to increase oil production for biofuels while also improving plant resilience in nutrient-depleted or challenging soils.

By combining plant biology with energy science, Brookhaven’s greenhouse research supports the development of more efficient, sustainable bioenergy sources. These studies could help reduce reliance on fossil fuels while ensuring crops can thrive under the environmental pressures expected in a changing climate.

The work highlights how carefully managed plant science can play a critical role in meeting future energy needs—rooted not just in technology, but in biology growing one plant at a time.
