Bethel, CT — November 10 —As the weather turned colder, Bethel Fire & EMS focused their training on a common seasonal hazard in New England: chimney fires. On Monday, members used the department’s handmade backyard chimney prop to review techniques for extinguishment, overhaul, and checking for extension into structural spaces. Chimney fires are generally caused by creosote accumulation or wildlife blockage, which, when left unchecked, can expand beyond the flue and lead to a whole structure fire.

The department noted that, while chimney fires are a common call for firefighters, they are largely preventable. Homeowners who use fireplaces or wood stoves during the winter months are encouraged to schedule chimney inspections and cleanings, avoid burning softwoods, keep storage materials away from unprotected chimneys in attic spaces, and ensure smoke detectors are working properly.
