Avon, CT — November 25 — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department responded to its first chimney fire of the season, reminding residents that heating-related incidents remain common as temperatures drop. Crews accessed the roof to check the chimney, clear remaining hazards, and ensure no extension into the structure. Chimney fires often start from creosote buildup or improper fuel, and quick action is essential to keep the fire contained to the flue.

With winter heating underway, the department encourages homeowners to schedule annual chimney inspections and cleanings, burn only dry hardwood, keep the damper and cap clear, and store cooled ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. These steps help reduce the chance of a chimney fire and support safe fireplace use throughout the season.
