Shirley NY- On November 8th at about 11:20 AM Suffolk FRES toned out the mastic fire department for a report of a debris fire on Carnation Dr between Moriches Middle Island Rd and Crewstwood.
Captain Steve Januszkiewicz [5-12-50] arrived on scene within minutes and met with the home owners. The home owners brought him to the rear of the house where their ride on lawn tractor they were using to clean up the yard had gone on fire and was still smoking after an officer from the SCPD has exhausted his fire extinguisher containing the fire as best he could.
Captain Januskiewicz advised Lieutenant Jason L from engine 5-12-3 to have the engine pull up behind the police car and have the crew stretch a handline to the rear of the house. Engine 5-12-2 was directed to bring their crew up to assist unit 3s crew. They hit the lawn tractor with water and removed some of the debris from under the tractor to make sure that they were able to extinguish any remaining fire. Fire Police was on scene to assist with traffic if needed. The units were all back in service within 20 minutes.
