Firefighters and wildland firefighting crews from multiple states responded to a wildfire along the Taconic Crest, where steep terrain and limited access complicated suppression operations.
The fire began October 25, 2026, near Mattison Hollow in Berlin, New York, and spread into neighboring Massachusetts. The Berlin Fire Department was the initial responding agency, encountering approximately 1.5 acres burning in a wooded area.
As conditions developed, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers coordinated suppression efforts with approximately 15 fire departments from New York, Massachusetts and Vermont. Identified assisting departments included Hoosick Falls, Lebanon Valley, Rensselaer, Pownal, Williamstown, Hancock and Florida.
New York State Parks wildland firefighters, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation personnel and aviation resources also assisted. Crews established containment lines and conducted suppression operations in difficult terrain, supported by helicopter water drops.
By October 27, the wildfire had burned approximately 251 acres, with 119 personnel involved in the response. Officials reported the fire fully contained that evening, although crews continued monitoring hot spots and securing containment lines.
No injuries or structural losses were reported, and the cause of the fire remained undetermined.
