A late-night structure fire brought firefighters from Gloversville and Johnstown to Spring Street, where crews encountered heavy fire involving two neighboring residences. Defensive operations were initiated to contain the fire and limit damage to the adjoining building.
The Gloversville Fire Department was initially dispatched to 176 Spring Street in Gloversville, New York, at 10:28 p.m. on October 28, 2026, with units arriving within three minutes. Captain Ed Martelle confirmed a working fire involving 174 and 176 Spring Street and requested additional resources through the Fourth Battalion and an all-hands assignment.
The Johnstown Fire Department responded with additional personnel and apparatus, while the Berkshire Fire Department provided station coverage for Gloversville. Firefighters operated defensively at 176 Spring Street, where heavy fire conditions and hydrant problems complicated suppression efforts. Crews concentrated on containing the fire and preventing further extension into the neighboring residence.
Four adults were displaced. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported. Lake Valley EMS provided standby coverage, while Gloversville Police assisted with traffic control and scene security.
The cause remained under investigation by Gloversville and Johnstown fire investigators, the Gloversville Police Department, and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control's Arson Investigation Unit.
All responding units were back in service by 3:55 a.m. the following morning. Sturgy's Pizzeria provided food, water, and coffee to emergency personnel and affected residents during the incident.
