South Windsor, CT - First responders from the South Windsor Fire Department, South Windsor Police Department, and the Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM) handled an extraordinary motor vehicle crash Tuesday morning that sent a passenger vehicle across a major state route, through a gully, and over railroad tracks before slamming into the rear of a commercial building.
Emergency units were dispatched at 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to Nutmeg Road South for a reported vehicle into a structure. Investigating crews determined that the car exited Mascolo Road, crossed all lanes of John Fitch Boulevard (Route 5), traversed a drainage gully, launched over the railroad tracks, squeezed directly between two large trees, and ultimately came to rest against the rear exterior wall of a commercial facility.
Despite the severe trajectory, both occupants inside the car were able to self-extricate prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. Both individuals were evaluated on scene by ASM paramedics and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The collision caused notable exterior structural damage, but an office worker seated directly on the opposite side of the impacted wall had fortuitously stepped away just moments before the impact occurred.
Personnel operating on Squad 2 and Car 10 secured the vehicle, disconnecting the battery and mitigating leaking fluids and fire hazards. Officials from the Southern Connecticut Railroad responded to inspect the rail corridor, officially confirming that the tracks sustained no structural damage.
Representatives from the South Windsor Fire Marshal's Office and the local Building Department were also called to the scene to conduct a full structural integrity evaluation of the damaged facility.
