This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Firefighters from the Main-Transit Fire Department responded to three working fires over a three-day period, providing rapid intervention coverage and additional apparatus to neighboring departments across Erie County.

The first assignment came Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, when Main-Transit was requested to provide a Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) at a working barn fire on Hiller Road in the Town of Newstead, New York. Multiple fire companies, including Newstead-area departments, Akron and Clarence, responded to the second-alarm incident. Crews worked to contain the fire while addressing exposure concerns involving nearby propane tanks and silos.

While Main-Transit personnel were returning from the Newstead incident, a second FAST request was transmitted for a working structure fire in the East Amherst Fire Department's district.

The fire involved an attached garage on Wood Acres Drive in Amherst, New York. East Amherst Fire Department led the response, with mutual aid from Getzville, Ellicott Creek, Main-Transit, Clarence Center and Swormville fire companies. Main-Transit provided firefighter rescue standby coverage while crews conducted suppression operations. Preliminary damage estimates were reported at approximately $300,000.

The department's mutual-aid activity continued early Saturday morning, October 3, when Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company responded to a residential garage and house fire at 4680 Shimerville Road in Clarence, New York.

Main-Transit was dispatched to assist Harris Hill and responded with Engine 2 and Truck 6, providing additional personnel and apparatus to support fireground operations. The assignment differed from the previous two incidents, which involved dedicated FAST coverage.

Across the three responses, Main-Transit personnel supported neighboring fire departments through mutual-aid assignments, providing specialized firefighter rescue resources and additional apparatus as requested by incident commanders.
