October 15, 2025 — The Westfield Fire Department and Fire Prevention Bureau proudly participated in Fire Prevention Month, visiting local elementary schools to educate students and teachers on essential fire safety practices.
Throughout the month, firefighters met with students from grades K–3, hosting assemblies focused on fire prevention and emergency preparedness. The department emphasized the importance of learning these life-saving lessons at a young age to help children build safe habits that last a lifetime.
During the visits, firefighters shared a series of key fire safety tips, including:
- Call 911 in an emergency after reaching safety.
- Never play with matches or lighters — alert an adult if found.
- Stop, Drop, and Roll if clothing catches fire.
- Install and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home.
- Replace batteries in alarms when clocks change.
- Stay away from stoves and pans while adults are cooking.
- Practice home escape drills and identify two ways out of every room.
- Never re-enter a burning building once safely outside.
Students also learned what to do if a fire occurs while they’re in their bedrooms, such as checking doors for heat, blocking smoke with blankets, and signaling for help through a window.
The department shared this year’s national theme — “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.” — reminding families that preparation and quick action can save lives.
