The Allamuchy Township Volunteer Fire Department (ATVFD) has issued a firm public message after repeated incidents involving drivers misusing the emergency shoulder on Interstate 80 during serious accidents.

Firefighters reported that over the past several months, they have responded to multiple major crashes involving overturned vehicles, trapped occupants, and heavy congestion — only to find the shoulder lanes blocked by civilian vehicles attempting to bypass traffic.

The ATVFD emphasized that misuse of the shoulder not only delays emergency response but puts first responders in danger, as firefighters have been forced to exit their trucks and physically move cars blocking their path.

“While someone’s trapped in a mangled car up ahead, we’re wasting precious minutes moving vehicles that shouldn’t even be there,” the department noted.

The fire department urged all motorists to:

  • Stay in their lane.
  • Keep the shoulder clear.

Slow down and move over for flashing lights.

The message concluded with a reminder that first responders risk their lives for the community every time they respond to a call:

“We all want to get home safe. Please help us make sure everyone does.”
