GARFIELD, NJ - The Garfield Police Desk was flooded with calls reporting a fire at 568 Palisades Avenue just around 12:30 PM on October 5, 2025.

When the Chief arrived on scene, he instructed police to strike a second alarm. He reported a well-involved shed approximately 15 x 20 feet in size with multiple explosions. The house to which the shed belonged was also on fire. A car in the driveway was fully engulfed, and two homes located behind the shed on Prospect Street (67 and 71) were also on fire.

With that, he requested a third alarm to the scene and a fourth alarm to cover the city's firehouses.

The shed was a total loss. There was minor fire damage to the main house, but the two homes in the rear on Prospect sustained significant damage both inside and out, mostly to their rear sections.

A fourth home next to 67/71 Prospect also suffered damage, with some vinyl siding melted by the heat.

Mutual aid was provided by departments from both Bergen and Passaic counties, assisting both at the scene and in covering the city’s firehouses. The fire ultimately escalated to a fourth alarm.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for breathing problems.

Firefighters also rescued one dog from 67 Prospect.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Arson Squad were called to the scene to investigate and possibly determine the origin and cause of the fire.
