Flames Level Stonewall Road Home: Red Rock Commands Multi-Town Strike to Contain Inactive Ruins

East Chatham, NY - More than a dozen emergency agencies across New York and Massachusetts mobilized late Monday afternoon to battle a fully involved residential structure fire on Stonewall Road, establishing extensive rural water shuttle operations to knock down the intense blaze.

At 4:21 p.m. on September 7, Columbia County 911 dispatched the Red Rock task force following reports of a structure fire in the district. Red Rock Car 1 arrived quickly on scene to heavy smoke pushing through the area and reported a single-family residence entirely engulfed in flames. Incident command was immediately established, prompting an urgent call for a Battalion 5 tanker task force and all available regional manpower.

With no municipal hydrants available, arriving crews executed large-scale rural water supply operations. Red Rock Engine 7612 laid out approximately 1,300 feet of large-diameter hose from the road to feed frontline attack lines, while Canaan Engine 3441 established a tanker dump site at the driveway entrance on Stonewall Road. Responding companies assembled portable folding drop tanks to establish a continuous water supply loop, keeping master streams and handlines supplied as mutual aid tankers cycled through the rural shuttle route.

Aggressive suppression efforts successfully brought the main body of fire down by 6:15 p.m., transitioning the scene into a prolonged and laborious overhaul. Due to extensive structural collapse and heavy debris, the Town of Canaan Highway Department deployed an excavator to tear apart charred remains, allowing firefighters to reach and saturate deeply buried void spaces and stubborn pockets of fire.

The sheer scale of the incident drew mutual aid apparatus and interior crews from across Columbia County and western Massachusetts, including Canaan, East Chatham, Lebanon Valley, North Chatham, Niverville, Austerlitz, Tri-Village, Chatham, and Ghent, alongside interstate tanker and engine support from Richmond and West Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Chatham Rescue, New York State Police, and multiple vehicles from the Columbia County Fire Coordinator’s office provided essential operational and medical support, while the Stephentown Fire Department staged apparatus to cover concurrent emergency calls throughout Canaan and Red Rock.

No injuries were reported among civilians or responding emergency personnel. The exact cause and origin of the fire remain under active investigation.
