Engine Fire Knocked Down After Early Morning Crash on Sunrise Highway Service Road

Sayville, NY - Firefighters knocked down an engine compartment blaze early Wednesday morning after a vehicle careened off the roadway along the eastbound Sunrise Highway service road in southern Suffolk County.

On September 16, the Sayville Fire Department was dispatched following reports of a motor vehicle accident on the eastbound service road near the Lincoln Avenue intersection. First-arriving units located a single passenger vehicle that had left the roadway and come to rest off the shoulder, with active fire pushing from under the hood and engine bay.

Before fire apparatus arrived, responding officers from the Suffolk County Police Department successfully extricated the lone occupant from the passenger compartment, moving the driver away from the burning vehicle. Paramedics from the Sayville Community Ambulance evaluated the motorist on scene before initiating transport to a local hospital for further medical assessment.

Operating under the command of Chief of Department Ryan Quarte, Sayville fire crews quickly stretched an attack handline and initiated a direct suppression push on the engine compartment. Firefighters made rapid work of the flames, containing the fire to the front assembly and preventing extension into the vehicle's cabin or surrounding roadside brush.

After completing overhaul, checking for residual fire extension, and addressing automotive fluid hazards on the shoulder, Sayville units cleared the roadway and returned to quarters.
