Land-Based Departments Step Up: Sayville Aids Fire Island Operations via Ferry Crossing

Sayville, NY - Firefighters from the Sayville Fire Department crossed the Great South Bay by passenger ferry Wednesday afternoon, joining neighboring mainland departments to supply critical manpower and support at an active structure fire in Fire Island Pines.

On September 16, Sayville was activated as part of a coordinated mutual aid deployment alongside the Bayport Fire Department and the West Sayville Fire Department to reinforce barrier island firefighting operations. A designated contingency of Sayville volunteers boarded the local Sayville Ferry loaded with portable tools and essential equipment to make the waterborne transit to the island.

Because late-season civilian and volunteer numbers on Fire Island typically thin out following the summer peak, local island fire districts regularly depend on coordinated assistance from South Shore mainland agencies during major working fires.
