Rockport Firefighters Knocked Down Broadway Blaze

Rockport, MA — September 20 — Rockport firefighters responded to 19 Broadway Avenue just before 10 a.m. On Sunday following a report of a strong propane or gas smell inside the mixed-use building. Police arrived first and increased the incident's priority as the situation evolved.

Car 1, Squad 1, Ladder 1, Engine 1, and Engine 2 arrived shortly after. Chief Mark Wonson issued additional dispatches as crews found thick black smoke and flames. A fourth alarm was eventually called, bringing more firefighters and equipment to the scene.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex, Wenham, Hamilton, Middleton, Ipswich, Peabody, Danvers, and Lynn. Station coverage was also given by nearby departments, while Rockport crews stayed focused on the incident. Rehab support was provided by Rehab Five.

Firefighters worked to control the fire, which was brought under control around 1 p.m.

National Grid was called to turn off the electrical supply. The fire damaged the Rockport House of Pizza and the mixed-use building, forcing at least two families to leave their homes and affecting businesses in the building. No injuries were reported.

Rockport Police helped evacuate residents and keep a safe distance around the building.

Rockport DPW and the Rockport Forest Fire Association also assisted with the response. Later, the DPW informed residents that water might appear discolored due to the use of many hydrants during the fire.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Rockport Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit. The Rockport Fire Department is based at 37 Broadway Avenue.
