Rockport Firefighters Knocked Down Broadway Blaze

Rockport, MA — Rockport firefighters responded to 19 Broadway Avenue shortly before 10 a.m. on September 20 following a report of a strong propane or gas odor inside a mixed-use building. Police arrived first and upgraded the incident as conditions developed.
Car 1, Squad 1, Ladder 1, Engine 1 and Engine 2 responded, with crews encountering heavy smoke and fire. The incident eventually reached a fourth alarm, bringing additional personnel and apparatus to the scene.
Mutual aid came from Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex, Wenham, Hamilton, Middleton, Ipswich, Peabody, Danvers and Lynn. Rehab Five provided firefighter rehabilitation, while additional departments provided station coverage.
Crews brought the fire under control around 1 p.m. National Grid was requested to secure electrical service to the building.
The fire damaged the Rockport House of Pizza and other portions of the mixed-use building, displacing at least two families and affecting businesses. No injuries were reported.
Rockport Police assisted with evacuations and scene control, while Rockport DPW and the Rockport Forest Fire Association also assisted.
The cause remains under investigation by the Rockport Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
