Orleans, MA - A multi-agency task force of Cape Cod fire departments operated for several hours Wednesday evening to contain and extinguish a fully involved 60-foot-by-40-foot barn fire off Horseshoe Lane in Barnstable County.

Emergency communications received a 911 report via the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, alerting responders to an active barn fire in South Orleans. Orleans Fire-Rescue transmitted a full department recall and received automatic mutual aid engine and ladder responses from the Eastham, Harwich, and Brewster fire departments.

First-arriving apparatus encountered a 2,400-square-foot agricultural structure heavily enveloped in flames. Because the Horseshoe Lane sector of South Orleans lacks municipal fire hydrants, incident commanders initiated a rural water supply operation, dispatching a special call for mobile water tankers from the Wellfleet, Truro, and West Barnstable fire departments.

Operating companies established a continuous water shuttle, hauling thousands of gallons from an active municipal hydrant situated nearly a mile from the fire scene to sustain heavy attack lines. Firefighters brought the intense blaze under control in just over an hour before spending several additional hours overhauling structural collapse debris and wetting down deep-seated hot spots.

No injuries to civilians or emergency personnel were reported throughout the incident. The cause and origin of the Barnstable County blaze remain under active investigation.
