Attleboro, MA - Firefighters from the Attleboro Fire Department rescued a disoriented resident from a heavily smoke-charged apartment Thursday morning after a routine alarm investigation escalated into a successful life-saving operation in Bristol County.
Emergency units were dispatched at approximately 9:08 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, to a six-unit residential apartment building at 43 Peck Street in Bristol County for a reported smoke detector activation, with the initial caller noting no visible exterior smoke or flame.
First-due companies arrived to find nothing showing from the outside, but upon entering the common hallways, personnel detected a noticeable odor of smoke. Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive investigation, evacuating residents and checking individual units. Forced entry into a first-floor occupancy revealed zero-visibility conditions, heavy toxic smoke, and significantly elevated concentrations of carbon monoxide.
During an immediate primary search of the hazardous atmosphere, search teams located a disoriented resident lying in bed who was physically unable to self-evacuate. Responders rapidly extricated and carried the victim outside to an awaiting ambulance for field triage and emergency medical care.
Simultaneously, suppression crews located and extinguished combustible materials that had ignited on an energized kitchen stovetop, preventing fire extension to the residential framing. Ventilation fans were deployed to clear residual smoke and high carbon monoxide levels from the structure.
Following assessments by the City of Attleboro Building Inspector and Health Agent, building utilities remained intact, allowing displaced neighbors to reoccupy their units. The origin and cause remain under active review by the Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit, with preliminary evidence indicating items left on the stovetop ignited the blaze. Responding personnel fully secured the Bristol County scene and cleared at 10:12 a.m.
