Oakland Crews Responded to Smithfield Road Structure Fire

Oakland, ME — September 16 — Oakland Fire Rescue offered assistance on Wednesday afternoon when Belgrade firefighters responded to a reported structure fire on Smithfield Road.
The first notice mentioned thick black smoke coming from the roof of the building.
Oakland Fire Rescue joined Belgrade crews with extra personnel and equipment as firefighters made efforts to bring the fire under control.
The fire was reported at a residence located in the 900 block of Smithfield Road.
Later news reports confirmed the address as 983 Smithfield Road.Fire authorities stated that the residents were present when the fire started and were able to evacuate safely.No injuries were reported.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office later stated that the fire originated in a separate garage and then spread to the house.
Investigators noted that welding had occurred in the garage just before the fire was discovered, but the exact cause remained undetermined due to the level of damage.
Oakland Fire Rescue frequently provides mutual aid to nearby communities.
The department is based at two stations and handles over 1,200 fire, rescue, and EMS calls annually.Oakland is also part of an automatic mutual-aid agreement with Belgrade, Sidney, Rome, and Smithfield.
