Overnight Battle in Lewis County: High-Volume Water Flow Tames Destructive Barn Fire

West Carthage, NY - Firefighters from the West Carthage Fire Department mounted an intensive, seven-hour suppression effort Thursday afternoon, establishing a continuous high-volume rural water shuttle to combat a fully involved barn fire in the Town of Denmark.

On the afternoon of September 10, West Carthage units were activated on mutual aid to assist with a massive agricultural blaze involving a barn completely engulfed in flames. Due to the absence of municipal fire hydrants across the rural Lewis County landscape, incident commanders immediately initiated an extensive tanker shuttle operation, drawing from static sources to sustain continuous master-stream discharge and handline operations throughout the evening and overnight hours.

West Carthage deployed a major mobilization from both its operational facilities, led in the field by Chief 49-0-1 and 1st Assistant Chief 49-0-2. The response included Pumper Tankers 49-4-1 and 49-4-2, Rescue 49-6-1, and Utility 49-7-1 out of the Village Station, alongside Engine 49-1-1, Tanker 49-5-1, and Utility 49-7-2 from the Champion Station.

Crews operated on scene for over seven hours, knocking down heavy structural fire, cooling surrounding exposures, and pulling apart collapsed tin and timber framing to douse deeply seated smoldering hay and hot spots. After clearing the scene, personnel spent an additional hour cleaning gear, repacking hundreds of feet of hose, and returning the department's fleet to full operational readiness.

Department leadership expressed gratitude to responding volunteer members, the West Carthage Ladies Auxiliary for on-scene rehabilitation support, and all neighboring mutual aid departments that assisted throughout the extended operation.
