Taunton Ladder 5 Breaches Walls to Lock Down Solvay Residential Blaze

Taunton, NY - Taunton Ladder 5 responded on mutual aid Tuesday afternoon, providing first-due truck company operations and checking for concealed fire extension during a residential incident on Rutledge Street in Onondaga County.

At approximately 2:25 p.m. on September 8, Taunton Ladder 5, under the direction of Lieutenant Williams, was dispatched to assist the Solvay Fire District with a reported residential structure fire located in the 200 block of Rutledge Street. Responding directly from quarters with full staffing, Ladder 5 arrived on scene as the primary aerial apparatus while the primary engine company established a secure positive water supply.

Upon making entry into the structure, interior teams encountered moderate smoke and identified a minor fire that had been largely knocked down prior to fire department access. Ladder 5 personnel immediately initiated truck company functions, tearing into wall cavities to verify that no fire had extended into the building’s structural framing. The breach work allowed the engine company to thoroughly extinguish remaining hot spots, while truck crews conducted positive-pressure and natural ventilation to purge lingering smoke from the living quarters.

Incident command designated Deputy Chief Harris (Car 2) to oversee interior operations, ensuring a smooth transition between ventilation, overhaul, and suppression tasks.

Once the dwelling was determined to be completely clear of hidden embers and residual toxic gases, Ladder 5 picked up equipment and returned to service at approximately 3:00 p.m. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
