WASHINGTON, N.H. (Aug. 19, 2025) — Crews from New Hampshire and Vermont extinguished a small but hard-to-reach wildfire Tuesday morning in northern Washington, officials said.

Washington and Lempster firefighters, joined by a state forest ranger, located the fire on foot after reports the blaze might be larger. The fire, about one acre, was traced to an earlier lightning strike.

Because of the remote location, crews staged from Sugar House Road and laid 3,200 feet of hose up a mountain to reach the scene. Firefighters said smoke was limited to the peak and not visible to the public, despite reports of haze in the area.

The fire did not threaten homes, but its location made access challenging. After containment, crews left the woods Tuesday afternoon, with a team scheduled to return the next morning to check for hot spots.

Mutual aid came from departments in New Hampshire and Vermont, including Lempster, Marlow, Winchester, Newbury, Bennington, Goshen, Milford, Rockingham, Putney, the Capital Area team, state forest rangers and Hillsboro police.
