BOOTHBAY, Maine (Weekend of Aug. 9–10, 2025) — Boothbay firefighters responded to two separate island cooking fires over the weekend, one of which burned a 100-by-100-foot area, officials said.

The first blaze occurred on Fort Island in the Damariscotta River on state-owned land. Firefighters received critical help from residents Chuck Wagstaff and Jody Durgan, who provided boats to access the island. The R/V Clarice from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences was also used.

Late that night, the U.S. Coast Guard ferried six firefighters to White Island off Ocean Point after reports of a large fire. Crews found the cooking fire had already been extinguished.

The department reminded residents and campers to keep cooking fires small and ensure they are completely out before leaving campsites.
