CANAAN, NY — A building fire on Frisbee Street in the Town of Canaan prompted a multi-department reaction early on Monday morning, August 24, 2026.

The Canaan task team was sent by Columbia County 911 in response to a reported building fire at around 4:46 a.m. Later, responding units were informed that there was a barn involved.

A 25-by-100-foot structure was completely involved, according to East Chatham Car 1. Soon after, Canaan Car 1 and Canaan 3431 with a full crew arrived, and Canaan Car 1 was given leadership.

In order to assist the fireground water supply operation, Canaan leadership requested a tanker response from Battalion 5 after the first size-up. Red Rock Car 1 and Red Rock 7612 set up a fill location. To supply water for activities on the spot, firefighters set up three movable ponds.

Additionally, the Town of Canaan Highway Department was asked to help with a dump truck with a trailer and an excavator. Firefighters were able to continue their efforts to contain the fire by using the equipment to clear debris.

Several units from the New York State Police responded, and they helped by blocking ordinary traffic on Frisbee Street.

The fire claimed the lives of three calves. Neither civilians nor firemen were hurt.
