CORTLANDVILLE, N.Y. (Friday, Aug. 22, 2025) — A hiker who was injured in a fall Friday afternoon was rescued from the Hoxie Gorge trail system and transported to a hospital, officials said.

The Cortlandville Fire Department, TLC-EMS and New York State Police were dispatched around 3:25 p.m. after the person was reported down on the trail. Using phone location data provided by the Cortland County Department of Emergency Response and Communications, rescuers pinpointed the patient about a quarter-mile into the woods.

The Virgil Fire Department responded with four-wheelers to help carry the patient out. Fire officials said it took about 45 minutes to bring the hiker to a waiting ambulance.

The individual was transported by TLC-EMS for treatment of injuries, which were not detailed. The state Department of Environmental Conservation also assisted at the scene.
