PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Friday, Aug. 15, 2025) — A fire that tore through a Margaret Street apartment building Friday night forced two dangerous evacuations of firefighters but left all residents safely out, officials said.
The Plattsburgh Fire Department was dispatched at 9:37 p.m. to 210 Margaret St., where crews arrived to find heavy smoke venting from the eaves and flames showing from the roof.
Uncertainty about possible entrapment prompted primary searches of each unit, which confirmed all residents were out before crews arrived. An all-call brought in off-duty personnel to assist, the department said.
Conditions shifted quickly inside, forcing firefighters to evacuate twice. In one case, a ceiling collapse cut off interior crews. In another, sudden smoke and heat changes forced a firefighter to bail headfirst from a second-story window onto a ladder. All members escaped without serious injury.
Two cats were rescued, though one died from smoke inhalation.
Mutual aid was provided by District No. 3, South Plattsburgh, Cumberland Head, The Fighting 18th and Morrisonville fire departments. CVPH EMS, Plattsburgh City Police and PMLD also assisted.
Officials said the incident underscored both the dangers of firefighting and the value of regional cooperation in keeping the community safe.
