Fuel Tank Fireball on 287: South Plainfield Crews Knock Down Fully Involved Vehicle Blaze

S Plainfield, NJ - South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Route 287 North, prior to Exit 4 (Durham Road), for a reported vehicle fire. Deputy 2 (Chief LaFerrera) arrived on scene and confirmed a fully involved passenger vehicle fire with heavy fire conditions extending throughout the engine compartment and passenger area, producing significant heat and smoke on the highway.


Engine 4 arrived and immediately stretched a 1¾” attack line, initiating an aggressive knockdown operation. Crews made a quick, direct attack on the main body of fire, rapidly containing the blaze and preventing further spread to the surrounding roadway and nearby traffic lanes. Engine 5 and Engine 6 supported operations by providing aditional manpower, securing the incident area, and assisting with traffic control to maintain a safe operating corridor for firefighters.


During operations in Middlesex County on August 2, firefighters identified a compromised fuel tank with active leakage contributing to ongoing hazard conditions on the roadway. Due to the potential environmental risk and flammable runoff concerns, Middlesex County Hazmat FMBA Local 100 was requested to the scene for specialized mitigation support.


Once suppression was complete, crews conducted a detailed overhaul of the vehicle to ensure all fire extension and hidden hot spots were fully extinguished. Absorbent measures and hazard control steps were implemented in cordination with Hazmat personnel to address fuel contamination and secure the scene.


The roadway remained fully closed and controlled throughout the incident to protect both responders and motorists until all hazards were mitigated. After final checks and confirmation of scene safety, units cleared with no further complications reported.
