On the afternoon of October 1st, Jersey City fire units answered an alarm on Boyd Avenue and found heavy fire showing from a two-story dwelling in a row of attached dwellings. Firefighters reported an extreme clutter condition in the home, with furniture piled up five feet high, complicating search and firefighting efforts.
Members removed one victim from the burning house, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other people were injured, and a total of 19 people were displaced, according to WABC-TV.
Fire raced through a common cockloft to other homes, and a fourth alarm was transmitted by Deputy Chief Joe Menendez. Trench cuts on each side of the main fire assisted in controlling the fire.
