Off-Duty Firefighter Helps 14 Residents Escape Before Garage Fire Spreads

An off-duty Hopewell Valley volunteer firefighter helped evacuate 14 residents after discovering a garage fire that was extending toward an occupied home on Darrow Drive.

The incident was reported at approximately 5:01 a.m. on August 4, 2026, in Hopewell Township, New Jersey, after nearby residents reported a vehicle burning inside a detached garage. Police and firefighters arrived to find the garage fully involved, with fire involving three vehicles and extending toward the residence.

Before the arrival of fire companies, an off-duty volunteer firefighter who lived adjacent to the property noticed the fire, alerted the occupants and assisted all 14 residents from the home. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Pennington Fire Company was the first responding fire department identified in available reporting, with Assistant Chief Ingram establishing command. Mutual-aid and support resources included Hopewell Fire Department, Union Fire Company, Lawrence Township Fire Department, Princeton Fire Department, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services and Hopewell Emergency Medical Unit.

Crews brought the fire under control before significant extension into the residence. The detached garage and three vehicles were destroyed, while the house sustained minimal exterior damage.

The Mercer County Fire Marshal's Office and Hopewell Valley Emergency Services investigated the cause. Police reported that preliminary findings showed nothing suspicious, although the investigation remained open.
