BRIDGETON, N.J. (Wednesday, July 23, 2025) — A regional dive team spent hours Wednesday helping remove a large fallen tree that was blocking boat access on the Cohansey River, officials said.
The Downe Township Fire/Rescue and Dive Team was requested around 5 p.m. to assist the City of Bridgeton after the tree collapsed across the river north of the Commerce Street bridge.
At low tide, divers entered the water to help Garrison Tree Service crews rig the tree for removal. Together, they cut back large sections to reopen the river to boat traffic in case of emergencies.
Work is expected to continue Thursday as Garrison Tree Service completes the removal.
“This was a unique opportunity to assist the City of Bridgeton as they worked to ensure access for public safety,” the department said.
