On July 27, Botsford Fire Rescue responded to a general fire alarm at a commercial plaza in its first-due area.

When Engine 551 and Tanker 559 arrived, they discovered active alarms but no fire. Firefighters stretched a precautionary handline after finding smoke and the smell of burning from one business during the investigation. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Hook & Ladder arrived on the scene as part of an increased response. The building was searched, the roof was climbed, and the fire marshal was called.

A malfunctioning rooftop HVAC unit was identified as the cause of the incident. Firefighters evacuated the building after isolating the equipment, and the Newtown Fire Marshal's Office will contact the property owner.
