Sparrowbush Engine Company was assisted by regional mutual-aid companies in extricating a seriously injured man whose vehicle left the roadway, struck parked vehicles and came to rest at the edge of a rapidly flowing stream on Wednesday morning, July 29.

The accident occurred on Peenpack Trail in Cahoonzie/Sparrowbush, Town of Deerpark, at approximately 9:30 a.m. The cause of the accident was not immediately available, but it was believed that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency that caused his vehicle to leave the roadway.

A caller near the scene reported to 911 that the vehicle had left Peenpack Trail, struck a parked trailer and car, traveled down a hill and came to rest near a stream. The caller also reported that the driver appeared to be trapped inside the van.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel reported that the vehicle was not in the water but had come to rest at the edge of the stream, with the driver unconscious and entrapped. Due to the nature of the driver’s injuries, a medevac was requested but was unable to respond because of weather conditions. A second medevac was also unable to respond.

Following extrication by firefighters, the driver was transported by ambulance to Garnet Medical Center for treatment of injuries, including head trauma. Further information and an update on the driver’s condition were not immediately available.
