Lifeguard Attacked During Training At Smith Point Beach

On Sunday July 3rd 2022 a lifeguard doing a training exercise was bitten by a shark at Smith Point Beach. The lifeguard was bitten in the chest and hand. The Smith Point Beach First Aid Squad where he was bandaged up. The lifeguard was transported Southside Hospital for further treatment. Smith Point Beach was closed to swimming with other beaches in the surrounding area. Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Service Drone Team was requested to have a aerial look for the shark while Suffolk County Police Department Marine Mike and Smith Point Ocean Rescue Team Jetski was patrolling the water. The lifeguard was identified as Zack Gallo a ten year lifeguard with the Smith Point Ocean Rescue Team. He is expected to make a full recovery and be back on the beach soon.
