MIDDLE ISLAND, NY - On June 9th at about 2:57 P.M., the Middle Island FD was activated for a report of a house fire on Yaphank Middle Island Rd. On arrival of 1st Assistant Chief William Nevins (5-15-31), there was smoke coming from the eves and a fire in the attic. Assistant Chief Nevins transmitted the Signal 13-35 working fire assignment. Activating this brought in additional manpower from his department, and also triggered the mutual aid plan.
On arrival, at least two lines were stretched between Engines 5-15-6 and 5-15-11. Mutual aid was brought in from Yaphank, Ridge, Brookhaven lab and Coram Fire departments. Firefighters went to work to quickly knock down the fire and bring it under control. Once the main body of fire was knocked down and under control, firefighters went to work conducting overhaul and ensuring that no hot spots existed in the wall by using the Thermal Imaging Camera. They also went to work venting the house of any remaining smoke. The scene was placed under control just before 4:00 P.M. No injuries were reported, and the fire marshal was notified.
