At 0009 on May 23, 2024, Summerhill Borough, South Fork, St Michael, Portage, and Dauntless (Ebensburg) Fire Departments were dispatched for a garage fire in the New Germany section of Croyle Township. Summerhill Fire Chief Larry Penatzer was on scene within 5 minutes and confirmed a 4-bay garage fully involved and set up command.
Engine 861 (Summerhill) was the first engine on scene and pulled into the driveway to initiate a blitz attack with their deck gun. Water was flowing within 30 seconds of arrival. Engine 862, also from Summerhill, was the second engine in and supplied Engine 861 with their water and set up as the dump site for tankers. St Michael's engine set up as the fill site engine at a hydrant 3/4 mile away.
Two 2-1/2" handlines and the deck gun were used for knockdown, which was at 0034. Several 1-3/4" handlines were used for overhaul.
The garage and its contents, including a 1940 pick-up truck the owner was restoring, several ATVs, and a home office, along with the owner's pick-up truck located next to the house, were all completely destroyed. The excessive heat caused damage to the owner's residence, pool fencing, and a neighboring garage. Crews remained on scene for about 2-1/2 hours.
Forest Hills and Portage EMS also assisted at the scene.
