Penn Hills Crews Knock Down Street Fire After Garbage Truck Jettisons Load

Pen Hills, PA - Firefighters were called to a neighborhood intersection Friday morning after a garbage truck dumped a burning payload of refuse directly onto the roadway to prevent the vehicle itself from being consumed by flames.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on September 4, emergency dispatchers alerted Penn Hills Stations 227 and 223 to a vehicle fire at the intersection of Shenandoah Drive and Everglade Drive. First-arriving crews aboard Engine 227 encountered a municipal sanitation truck whose operator had taken swift evasive action by dumping the smoldering cargo onto the asphalt after discovering the load had ignited inside the hopper.

The crew from Engine 227 established a dedicated water supply and stretched an attack line to begin dousing the actively burning heap of trash. Rescue 223 and Multi-Purpose 223 arrived on scene shortly after, deploying additional personnel and tools to break apart the compacted pile, wet down smoldering hot spots, and thoroughly saturate the refuse.

Operating under the direction of Chief 227, crews successfully subdued the blaze within 30 minutes, preventing damage to the collection vehicle and nearby properties. No injuries were reported to civilian sanitation workers or responding emergency personnel.

Fire officials noted that the blaze is believed to have originated from improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries that ignited under mechanical compaction. Municipal and refuge company crews took over the scene to clear the debris from the roadway, with complete site cleanup estimated by early afternoon.
