Train Slams into Empty Tractor-Trailer at Freeport Road Crossing in Harmar Township

Allegheny, PA - Emergency personnel responded Thursday morning after a train collided with a tractor-trailer along a rail crossing in the 800 block of Freeport Road, blocking the corridor for more than an hour.

At 10:08 a.m. on September 3, dispatchers alerted Stations 315, 175, 111, and 216 to reports of a train versus commercial vehicle collision in Harmar Township. Arriving first on the scene, 315 Deputy conferred with Harmar Police, who confirmed the tractor-trailer was unloaded at the time of the impact. Both the semi-truck driver and the train crew members escaped the collision without injury.

With no active hazards, fuel spills, or entrapment, the response was scaled back to Allegheny Valley units, holding 315 Deputy, 315 Rescue, and 315 Special Service on the fireground. Firefighters assisted local law enforcement with extensive traffic control and perimeter management around the busy roadway.

Crews operated on scene for over an hour while rail and towing personnel worked to clear the disabled tractor-trailer from the crossing and inspect the tracks before reopening the roadway to normal traffic.
