A small but smoky fire in a River Edge garden apartment complex was quelled in short order by borough firefighters and mutual aid companies on June 11th.

The 3:30 p.m. alarm reported smoke from a building at 1182 Main Street, one of multiple 2 ½ story mostly attached buildings in the Steuben Arms apartment complex. Mutual aid units were immediately requested as smoke vented from the basement leasing office. Lines were stretched and a fire was located in a work area and extinguished. The apartments on the first floor were accessed and vented. No extension was found.

Mutual aid units were soon released. No injuries were reported. The cause was initially deemed to be a lamp in the work area.
