On the evening of April 17th Newark firefighters responded at 10:27 p.m. to 196 Jefferson St. on a fire.  Smoke detectors were heard down the block when firefighters arrived. The fire extended from 196 Jefferson Street the original fire building to exposures 194, 192, 190 and 188 Jefferson Street. At the height of the blaze 4 ladder pipes and several deck guns were used to knock down the blaze.

The fire left 59 individuals displaced, and six firefighters injured. The firefighters were later treated at University Hospital, and the displaced individuals are being helped with relocation by the Newark Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross. Over 100 firefighters battled the flames. It was deemed under control at 3:24 a.m., according to Newark officials. The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
