The South Walton Fire District joined towns across the state in celebrating National Florida Day, which commemorates Florida's admittance as the 27th state of the United States in 1845. The day celebrates the history, culture, and natural riches that distinguish the state. Fire officials stated that Florida has about 1,300 miles of coastline, 7,700 lakes, and approximately 1,700 rivers and streams. The state also has more than 230 sunshine days per year and is one of the few areas in the world where alligators and crocodiles share habitats. South Walton also has uncommon coastal dune lakes, which can only be found in a few sites across the country.
