ASHFORD, CT — January 17th — Route 44 was closed in both directions between North Road and Route 198 after the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department, located at 46 Westford Road, responded to a report of downed power lines on the route. In order to handle the hazard and restore safe conditions, firefighters guarded the area and worked with utility technicians.

While repairs were being made, drivers were urged to stay away from the area and take other routes. According to officials, winter weather, strong gusts, and ice conditions are the main causes of accidents involving downed lines. In order to maintain utility operations, safeguard public safety, and manage traffic, crews stayed on the scene. In order to ensure their safety, residents were warned to avoid any downed wires and to treat them as electrified. After Route 44 reopened, updates were to be given.
