January 22, 2026 — The Winder Fire Department is actively monitoring the expected winter weather event forecast for this weekend and is taking proactive steps to prepare the city and ensure first responders are ready to operate under hazardous conditions. Residents are strongly urged to stay off roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary, as icy surfaces and reduced visibility significantly increase the risk of crashes and can delay emergency response. Officials also warn residents to stay clear of downed power lines, treating all lines as energized and extremely dangerous, and to report them immediately by calling 9-1-1. In the event of power outages, the department emphasizes using heating devices with extreme caution, noting that improper use of space heaters, generators, or alternative heat sources can lead to fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. All heating equipment should be kept at least three feet from combustible materials, and generators should never be operated indoors or in garages. Residents are also reminded to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly, as these devices provide critical early warning during winter storms and power outages. The Winder Fire Department urges everyone to remain weather-aware, follow official guidance, and avoid unnecessary risks. In the event of an emergency, residents should call 9-1-1 immediately.
