The Ipswich Fire Department has declared the start of the 2026 Open Burning Season, which runs from January 15 to May 1 per Massachusetts regulations. During this time, open burning requires a daily permission and is only permitted during approved hours when the weather and air quality are favorable. Fires must be regularly monitored and kept a safe distance from buildings and other hazards. Only approved natural materials may be burned; leaves, home waste, building debris, and industrial materials are not permitted. Fire authorities stated that the open burning prohibitions are intended to lessen the risk of brush fires and preserve public safety in late winter and early spring. Residents should check state laws and secure required permissions before burning to avoid unnecessary fire responses and assure safe operations.
