The Essex, MA Fire Department has announced the start of the 2026 Open Burning Season, which begins on January 15 and extends until May 1 under state laws. Open burning is permitted only during specified hours and requires a permit from the local fire department. Fires must be regularly monitored, kept a safe distance from structures, and started only when the weather and air quality allow. Burning some materials is illegal, such as leaves, domestic rubbish, building debris, and industrial or commercial waste.
Fire authorities explained that the open burning prohibitions are in place to lessen the risk of brush fires and safeguard public safety during the dry spring months. Before burning, residents should examine state guidelines and secure the necessary licenses. Additional information about open burning safety and regulations is available from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and state agencies.
