January 30, 2026 — The National Weather Service in Atlanta has upgraded much of northeast and east-central Georgia to a Winter Storm Warning beginning Friday evening and continuing through early Saturday night, as confidence increases in a significant winter weather event. Forecasts now call for widespread snowfall of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts, accompanied by gusty winds and dangerously cold wind chills. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Atlanta Metro area and portions of northwest and east-central Georgia, where 0.25 to 1 inch of snow, locally up to 2 inches, is expected, though officials note this area could still be upgraded depending on evolving conditions. Snow is expected to begin Friday night, with the majority of accumulation occurring between 4:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Wind gusts up to 35 mph and rapidly falling temperatures into the 20s will create hazardous travel conditions, particularly on bridges and untreated roadways. Very cold temperatures are expected to persist for 48 to 60 hours, especially along and north of Interstate 20, increasing the risk of pipe bursts and cold-related illnesses. Dangerous wind chills are forecast across north Georgia Saturday and across both north and central Georgia Saturday night into Sunday. Emergency officials urge residents to closely monitor updated forecasts and prepare for prolonged winter impacts.
