Snow Shoveling Safety Reminder Issued by Westport Fire Department

Members of the Town of Westport Fire Department are reminding residents and fellow responders that snow shoveling can place added strain on the heart, especially during cold weather. Fire and EMS agencies routinely respond to winter-related medical calls tied to overexertion while clearing snow.
Cold air can increase blood pressure and reduce oxygen delivery, while heavy lifting and sudden exertion add stress to the body. Fire service safety guidance recommends warming up before shoveling, taking frequent breaks, and pushing snow instead of lifting when possible. Holding one’s breath during exertion should be avoided, and individuals are encouraged to go indoors periodically to warm up. Chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea are warning signs that should not be ignored. If symptoms occur, calling 911 allows responders to begin care quickly. Winter safety reminders like these help reduce preventable medical emergencies during storms and cleanup operations.
